Sunday Roundup – 1/16/11

Hello World,

Only a few hours upon writing this I finally (!!!) saw The Social Network with my mother at the local dollar theater, and I can definitely see why the film is considered one of the best of the year (I’ve heard people say it’s the first best film of the century, but I’m hesitant to voice such an opinion having only seen a handful of lauded films up until now compared to others out there). Still, having looked at its accuracy post-film viewing, I’m beginning to wonder at what point does fabrication become too much to really appreciate a narrative based off events having taken place not too long ago?

But I digress. Since there’s no Q&A there’ll be instead a bunch of links I found interesting and amusing this past week. So here goes:

• Confessions of a Disney Employee – eleven minutes of hilarity and comedy gold, period. As the title states this video is the anecdote of “Swoozie” during his time working at Disney’s MGM studios. Animation, Disney and comedy fans, click away and have yourselves a good hearty chortle!

The Chase Film – this short film demonstrates the new Intel i5 core processor, and quite impressively/entertainingly so too.

Pixar’s Zoetrope – I saw this at the Pixar Exhibit at the Oakland Museum a little over a month ago, and this zoetrope is simply amazing (plus you get to see a little bit of Studio Ghibli’s zoetrope as well, which I’m guessing is what inspired Pixar employees to do what they did). Animation and film fans, I definitely recommend watching this video!

A Brief History of Conspicuous Product Placement – funny and informative, this little video is particularly interesting in detailing how product placement has become so pervasive in movies (it also concludes that Michael Bay is the king of product placement whoring, much to my amusement)

College Humor on Angry Birds – this video effectively sums up why Angry Birds is so addictive and truly is the bane of time management. To date I’ve wasted at least fifteen hours playing this stupid game. And when I thought I’d finished after getting three stars on every single level, Rovio decides to kill me some more and makes Angry Birds: Holidays. Looks like I’ll never get anything again.

A Century of Film – A very interesting compilation of American film at different time periods. You may not agree with what films they chose to highlight or how long they focused on different decades, but it’s definitely worth your time to see how film has progressed and changed over the years, and perhaps see pop cultural trends as well.

FirefoxLive.org – Mozilla Firefox has teamed up with Knoxville Zoo to help Red Pandas (aka Firefoxes) and in addition to perhaps donating/supporting the conservation cause, you can see videos of cute little red pandas (I’m a sucker for animal videos)

Sara Bareille’s “King of Anything” – Bareille’s “Love Song” never quite stuck with me because I felt it was a bit repetitive, but “King of Anything” caught my attention and never let go. A fun and upbeat song for anyone sick of unsolicited advice from annoying people for sure!
